As an occasional coffee drinker, I was a little late to the whole Keurig party. I purchased my first Keurig two years ago. I opted for the Keurig Mini because it was small in size and available in a variety of fun colors. While red wasn’t my first chose, I went with it because I found a deal on eCRATER that was too good to pass up. My Keurig Mini and I have been inseparable ever since. It was the perfect size for our small counter tops and since I wasn’t a regular coffee drinker (maybe two cups per week or two), I didn’t mind having to fill it up with each use. When offered a larger model, I couldn’t even bring myself to keeping it, so I gave it away.
Fast forward to now and me and Keurig Mini are no longer together. *gasp* She now resides at my mother’s house. It’s perfect for her since it’s simple enough for her to use and it matches her apple decor. I, however, decided to upgrade to a bigger and better machine; the Keurig 2.0. I received the K500 model and a stainless steel carafe (sold separately) to put to the test. So today, I’d like to share how it’s holding up.
So the Keurig 2.0 series is special for a few reasons. It has the ability to brew a 4-cup carafe with the same ease and convenience of brewing a single-serve cup all at the touch of a button. The K500 features include an 80 ounce water reservoir, 2.4 inch color touch display (K300 is grayscale), and a strength control setting for brewing bolder coffee blends.
I love not having to refill my Keurig 2.0 as often as I did with my Mini. The interactive touch screen is pretty neat too. I also like being able to make a 4-cup batch using the carafe if we have guests over. My only concern with the new Keurig 2.0 system is its new scanning system which renders older and refillable K-cups useless. The purpose of Keurig’s scanning technology is to make the brewing process easier for people. By scanning the top label of each K-Cup, the machine is able to select the optimal settings based on the beverage (coffee, tea, or cocoa).
K-cups without a Keurig branded logo on the top of the K-cup won’t work with the Keurig 2.0 machine unless you do a little Macgyvering. So if you have a bunch of old K-cups lying around, you’ll have to get a little creative. I like the comfort of using my own coffee to suit my specific tastes and budget, so I’ve had to get a little creative myself. And now, my Keurig 2.0 experience is perfect. The smart features of this machine have definitely won me over and I think it’s worth the extra space it takes up on our counter top.
The Keurig 2.0 Brewing System (K300) retails for $139 and includes a Keurig Carafe along with K-Cup and K-Carafe packs to get you started. You can find the machine and K-Cup and K-Carafe packs at Walmart and can use layaway as a purchasing option. To be sure that the K-Cups are compatible with Keurig 2.0, look for the Keurig logo on the cup.
