5 Natural Hairstyles To Wear This Summer

5 Natural Hairstyles To Wear This Summer

Summer’s here and that means it’s time to switch up the hair for a hot new look! Here are five natural hair styles to enjoy this summer. Tell me about your go-to summer styles in the comments.

Bald Fade

Because look, ain’t nobody got time to be fussing with hair. Depending on your stage in life, you may be wanting to do a big chop. I know for me, cutting off my locs and buzzing my hair off was so invigorating. I enjoy not having to style my hair especially when I have to quickly get out of the house with the kids or if I need to take photos of myself for the blog. I can still do fun things like add color to it without having to worry about mistakes. I also enjoy wearing hats and head-wraps now that I don’t have a head full of hair and I love that my face is now a focal point. It’s been over a year and I have no plans of growing it out. I may even try wigs, but right now the short hair life is lit!

Twist Out

The twist out is the jam. There are many techniques that can be used to get the texture and curl definition of choice, but one thing’s for sure, the twist out a great way to obtain a nice fluffy fro and poppin’ curls. As a girl mom, the twist out is my go-to after washing Akilah’s hair. After detangling, I’ll put her hair in 4-6 twists to stretch her hair a bit to avoid too much shrinkage, and prep for a week of afroliciousness and luscious curls.

Messy Bun/Updo

The messy bun updo is a great transition style from a twist out that has gone stale, lol. Short on hair? You can add some volume and length with clip-ins unique to your hair texture. I’m impressed how realistic these 4B/4C clip ins look.

Box Braids & Locs

Box braids and locs are carefree hairstyles that scream summer. Box braids and (goddess/faux) locs are low maintenance protective styles that are perfect for vacation time where plenty of swimming, outdoor adventures, humidity and sweating are to be had. Bonus points if you already have a head full of natural locs, all you have to do is wash and re-twist!

Have some fun

Some fun ways to enhance these styles are by adding pops of color. It could be in the form of dye, extensions, clip-ins, headwraps, or headbands. Charms  are also a fun way to zhoosh up these summer hairdos. One of my favorite things to do when I wore locs was to add cowry shells and spiral cuffs to them. Metal cuffs were a 90’s staple for box braids and now they are trending once again, being used beyond the braid. They’re even available in bold, bright, colors.
