Family Silhouette Ornaments On A Whim

And the winners are: Some Lucky Dog, Megan R, and talisha sturms! Congrats!

Some of you may think that I’m pretty creative when it comes to my digital works, but when it comes to the physical art of crafting, I am pretty impaired. I’m pretty familiar with paper, popcicle sticks, beads, color pencils, and the hot glue gun. As for fancy stuff like cricket cutters and X-ACTO tools? Pfft. It wasn’t until I went here that I discovered X-ACTO tools. I was asked to pass the X-ACTO and I was like huh?

Elmer’s and X-ACTO challenged me to craft something that fits the theme of my blog. They sent me a HUGE box of craft supplies for inspiration. And after a few days of being completely overwhelmed just by the sight of all the supplies, I got to work.

Family life is a big deal here, so I decided to craft something that represents us. What was initially supposed to be fall themed decorations turned into family silhouette ornaments – hey, I did use pumpkin shapes!

In Photoshop, I turned side profile shots of us into silhouettes to be printed, cut, and colored with a black sharpie – I had no paint!

Prior to that, I printed closeup photos of our table cloths for a DIY pattern paper. I used a pumpkin cookie cutter as a stencil and traced the shape on to both patterned and turquoise construction paper. I then, cut them out. Additionally, I cut my patterned paper shapes in half to be glued on the sides of the construction paper shapes, making ornaments. Somewhere in between, I had a bowl of chili.

The back of the ornaments looked like eye sores so I glued construction paper to the backs and cut around the shape. Then, I glued our silhouettes in the center of the ornaments, punched holes, strung them, and attached them to a paper lantern. I wanted to go for the mobile look, but the strings were tangling all willy nilly. And that bugged me, so I did some twisting and tying.

I am VERY pleased at the outcome! I literally winged the entire project and I was totally expecting a disaster! I picked up some new skills and I am oh so inspired.
