Gifting A Gift Card Inside Of A DIY Recipe Book

We partnered with Target to bring you this slice of holiday cuteness as part of their #GiftCardCheer campaign.

The holidays are fast approaching! Have you gotten all of your shopping done? Sigh. Me either. Back in September, I put out a call for wishlists so that we could get started early, but we’ve still managed to repeat our typical last-minute shopping shuffle. This shuffle unfortunately ends in a lot of gift card purchases. While grabbing gift cards are perfect when you’re down to the wire, I find them to be a bit boring and impersonal. It’s the thought that always counts, buuut I like to put a little more thought into the gifts that I give.

During a recent survey, Target found that 90% of people love receiving gift cards as gifts, but only 30% of people feel good about giving them. Participants shared that during the holidays, they want to feel it’s OK to give gift cards- that it’s not just any easy check off the list. Because I am never content with just slipping a gift card in an envelope, I try to add thoughtful touches by creating my own gift card envelopes, slipping them in something the recipient may love, or even get silly by disguising the gift card as something else.

One year, we bought my mother-in-law a Pandora gift card and slipped in into a ceramic Pandora cupcake. Last year, we hide everyone’s gift cards in various food and toy boxes. My brother-in-law received a gift card in a crayon box and my father-in-law’s was wrapped in a box of lasagna. It’s simple things like these that turn gift card gifting into memorable experiences.

This year, I am gifting my mom a Target GiftCard® in a special way. For two years, she’s been asking for recipes so I am making her a recipe book! I’ve slipped her gift card inside so that she can purchase ingredients or kitchen supplies. She mentioned needing a whisk, so now she’ll be able to purchase one. Gifting a recipe book, one that is homemade and filled with family favorites, is an awesome gift in itself. Adding a gift card provides the icing on the cake ;-).

For my recipe book project, I headed to Target for materials and on-trend  embellishments. I grabbed a mini binder and 5-1/2″ x 8-1/2″ sheet protectors. In the holiday aisle, I grabbed some glitter ribbon and an ornament to complement the gold metallic polka dots on the binder. When I returned home, I got started on my recipe pages. In Photoshop, I designed recipe pages using some of our favorite recipes featured here on the blog. I trimmed them up and slipped them inside of the sheet protectors.

I wanted to come up with a special way to attach the gift card to the binder, so I created a slot by taping a gift tag to the  inside of the cover.

I hot glued the glitter ribbon and ornament to the front cover for the perfect touch.

I am so pleased with how this project turned out. I just know my mother is going to LOVE it! (No, she doesn’t read my blog.) If you decide to try this project, please share a snapshot and the recipient’s reaction with me! Happy Holidays!
