Organizing Our Coat Closet

beforecloset

disclosure

January is a month where I take some time to get the house together. After all, it’s a time when we are outdoors less and we have to live in our mess, lol. Our coat closet has always been a problem area. On countless occasions, we’ve lost hoodies, hats, gloves, and Jayden’s backpack. I can’t remember a time when the coat closet was easy to navigate. Now that I think about it, growing up, my mother’s coat closet was always a mess. These patterns repeat I tell ya, haha.

I’ve been trying to organize our coat closet, but I needed to take it a step further. Yes, it has looked worse than the photo above. A few years ago, I thought it would be a good idea to put all of our hats, gloves, and scarves into the black Aero bag on the shelf. We, however, accumulated so many accessories that the bag started to overflow and we forgot what we had.

Taking note of our closet issues, I grabbed a few things at Walmart to assist in organizing the closet. I removed everything that we didn’t need and relocated them. There was a cooler, fold up chairs, an ERGO carrier, and residual grocery bags cluttering up the floor of the closet. I replaced those things with a Mainstays expandable shoe rack (similar) and a Homz 3-drawer cart (similar / set of 3 ).  I placed our hats, earmuffs and gloves in the drawers and the shoes that Greg and I frequently wear are now sitting on the shoe rack. I’m going to pick up some more because you can expand or contract them to your liking. They’d be perfect for our bedroom closet where mounds of shoes get kicked around. I had a swinging arm pant rack (similar) that could be put to better use, so I used it to hang up my scarves as they didn’t quite fit in the drawers.

On the walls, I mounted multiple Command Utility Hooks to hang up an umbrella, Jayden’s backpack and “the latest” accessories we’re wanting to wear or remember that we have. A few years ago, I bought some hats and a scarf that I had totally forgotten about. With them on display, I can plan to wear them now. We regained the shelf space so we’re currently using it to store board games… and shoe cleaner :-).

Now I feel like we have some order. Now leaving for and returning from every day activities won’t be as stressful. Organizing our coat closet is one of many organizing projects I have up my sleeve. I’ll be sure to share as I tackle them on the blog or via Instagram!

What organizing projects are you currently tackling in your home?

I am a member of the Walmart Moms program. Walmart is compensating me for sharing this project. My participation is voluntary and all words and opinions are always my own. Read my full disclosure policy here.
