When it comes to building a child’s book collection, what are some of the first titles that come to mind? For me, classics by Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss was part of my earliest childhood memories, so of course I’ve made sure that Jayden has his very own collection. As you can tell from the photo above, he has some good ones… and I’m always on the hunt for more! The shelves were hung above Jayden’s loft bed to accommodate his Dr. Seuss books. The top shelf holds the taller books and the lower shelf holds the shorter books. The shelves are actually IKEA spice racks that I spray painted. Read more about that here.
Each year, schools celebrate Read Across America Day, a nationally recognized day to promote literacy and honor Dr. Seuss. Walmart is celebrating by offering a great deal through March 3rd, perfect for getting those Dr. Seuss libraries started or finished! Dr. Seuss beginner books will be on sale for $5 with a regular price of $8.99 and the Dr. Seuss board books will be $3.50 with a regular price of $4.99. Even if you’ve completed your collection, you may want to pick a few books up as gifts.
Many schools across the nation will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with a variety of events on March 3, 2014. While Jayden’s teacher hasn’t mentioned whether they’ll be celebrating, I’m sure they’ll do something fun and exciting. With all of the school cancellations and delays due to weather, I’m sure she’s still catching up on things. For more information on Read Across America, visit the NEA Read Across America page. Edited to add: Just received the memo on Jayden’s upcoming Seuss-iful week at school. I knew something was in the works!
