A few months ago, Greg mentioned wanting to be able to make soda at home. Instantly, I thought of the SodaStream soda maker. I had discovered SodaStream online a few years ago and its awesomeness had been embedded into my brain. I knew that it would make a fun kitchen gadget for me to play with Father’s Day gift for Greg. SodaStream was generous enough to send us a package containing the Fountain Jet Soda Starter Kit and an assortment of flavored syrups.
When it arrived, we argued about who the SodaStream was really for. Then, we gave it whirl.
Fill BPA free bottle with cold water.
Screw bottle into the Fountain Jet.
Carbonate water by pressing the carbonation button 1-5 times depending on desired carbonation.
BuZzz! – a very, very, loud buzz. You certainly can’t sneak off to make soda :).
Unscrew bottle from the Fountain Jet.
Prepare to add your favorite flavored syrup. They are high-fructose corn syrup free. They do contain Splenda.*
Pour syrup into carbonated water. It will fizz over if you don’t tilt and pour slowly!
Gently swirl bottle (with the top on) to mix in syrup.
The SodaStream Fountain Jet is relatively easy to use. I’ve been put on soda making duty, though, since Greg keeps making a mess with it. Maybe I just have the magic touch ;).
So how does it taste? Well, I really enjoy the Energy, Mango, and Pete’s Choice flavors. Greg’s favorites are Cola and Energy. We received a few diet flavors and since I’m not a fan of diet soda, naturally I didn’t too much care for them. It’s the noticeable after taste I’m not a fan of. I’d love to try the Peach Iced Tea and up and coming Green Tea flavors.
As far as cost effectiveness goes…please don’t make me do the math. I don’t drink a lot of soda and Greg’s trying to cut back. It all depends on how much soda you drink, the brand you prefer, and where you purchase it. It is such a convenience to be able to create fresh soft drinks at home in a variety of flavors that are sometimes hard to find. You can even get a little creative and use the carbonated water in other drinks like coffee and tea. It is also convenient not having to lug bottles and cans of soda into the house, then having to recycle them later. We are pleased with our fountain jet and will definitely continue using SodaStream products long term.
I say pop, but for the sake of this review, I consistently used the word soda.
* All SodaStream syrups contain Splenda. I’d really love to see some natural alternatives :).
