30 Green Days / Start a Container Garden (Re)using Rubber Bins & Various Pots

Living in a rental has its ups and downs. The positive? Not having to foot the bill for repairs – at least I hope not. The negative? Being limited to the kind of modifications you can make to the property and land. I like to call myself a “rental rebel” because I have found so many workarounds to common rental woes. I’ve been gardening for about four years now and I haven’t let living in a rental get me down.

Since this week of the #30GreenDays challenge is all about reusing, I thought I’d share a bit about the container garden I created using various items I had on hand. A large portion of my garden was created using rubber storage bins. I planned to write a tutorial shortly after assembly, but that never happened. The photos are patiently waiting on my portable hard drive. In the meantime, you can find a similar tutorial on Jen’s Homemade Self Watering Planter post.

Greg and I created six of the self watering planters using rubber storage bins, PVC pipe, and food storage containers for the baskets. I’ve grown, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, strawberries, cabbage, okra, watermelon, beans, beets, carrots, corn in these planters. I’ve utilized flower boxes and baskets for growing food as well. I usually plant lettuce in flower boxes, small tomatoes, herbs, onions in large pots, and small pepper bushes in hanging baskets.

The harvest is always amazing. From the outside looking in (on Instagram), you’d think I had a fancy garden set up. Through our initial MacGyvering, we are able to grow our own produce yearly, reducing our carbon footprint. Friday, I’ll be posting my last post of the 30 Days Green challenge. It involves thrifting!
