Streamlining for Peace of Mind This New Year

This post is sponsored by H&R Block but the content and opinions expressed here are my own.

December is the time we all start reflecting on how our lives have gone over the past 11 months,  and make resolutions we may or may not keep. “New year, new me.” That’s what everyone is going to be shouting over the next few weeks. I don’t want to be a new me though. This year has been a busy one for my family and me, and I think more than anything, I’m grateful for the little nuggets of peace we’ve managed to have amidst the chaos. Here are some things I plan to do in the new year to keep everything streamlined in order to focus on what matters the most… my family.

Stop doing things that you don’t enjoy

2019 is going to bring a fresh new year to us, and this year I am committing to a more simplified lifestyle for us. Simplifying your life takes time and work. You can start with a few things like purging items that you no longer need. Stop doing things that no longer make you happy. One of the things I’m planning on doing is handing over my taxes to the pros. H&R Block has been handling taxes for years. They now have upfront, transparent pricing which keeps customers informed before filing, so there are no surprises. They even have an option to file myself online, so if I decide I want to DIY in my favorite pajamas with a cup of tea, I can do that. On the website, you can select a tax pro experienced in your specific situation. This is definitely a plus for me being self-employed.

Stop being busy for busy’s sake

So many of us worshipped at the altar of busy in 2018. Let’s not take that into the new year. The altar of busy is where so many of us drain our energy doing things that we aren’t good at and we don’t understand. Sometimes that means hiring someone you can trust, like the folks at H&R Block. They are super friendly, they understand the majority of people can be confused when it comes to tax topics and they guide you through it so you feel reassured that everything is going to be just fine.

Take the path of least resistance

We tie too much of our success into being super hardworking or busy or struggling. It is totally ok for you to work hard when you need to, but let’s stop setting ourselves up for hard work just so we can say we did it. In 2019, I want you to consider taking the path of least resistance. Find the easiest way to get the task done and take it! This isn’t going to come without an initial touch of guilt, because sometimes we don’t feel like we haven’t earned it unless we have killed ourselves trying to get it done. Stop doing this to yourself! Give yourself permission in 2019 to delegate tasks to alleviate stress. This year, instead of staying up all night over the expense reports during tax season, consider H&R Block for all your tax filing needs. I’m learning to accept and ask for help more and more. By doing so, I get more time to be present for family and spend much-needed time dating my love.

2019 is coming faster than we think. You don’t have to be a completely new you. Let’s reform the you that is already here. It is easier than you’re imagining.

Stop being busy for busy sake is a great point. I need to really adhere to that for the new year!

Listen! I love your tip about not doing things you don't enjoy. I had to really take stock of the things I was doing and people I spend my time with and decide if I actually enjoyed it/them. It's a simple concept but makes a big impact.

Hey Sheena, cheers to just enjoying where you're at and doing what you love! I think a lot of us do things out of obligation, not actual interest or desire. But, sometimes it's hard to stop.
