When they invite guests to a summer BBQ, some people give clear instructions on what they want them to bring. Others tell guests not to worry. But turning up empty-handed can seem rude. It’s often easier if we’ve been told what to get, but if that’s not the case, here are some ideas of things that you could take to your family BBQ.
Meat
The obvious thing to take to a BBQ is, of course, meat, and typically there can never be too much meat at a BBQ. If you like something specific that you don’t think they’ll have, it’s a great thing to take. Burgers and sausages are a good choice too because most people like them.
Meat-Free Options
Meat-free options often get neglected at BBQs, but not everyone can or likes to eat meat, and sometimes it’s just nice to have some variety. Things like fish or halloumi can be BBQed and make a great alternative.
Side Dishes
Side dishes can be forgotten too, so a homemade salad, bread, crudites and dips, corn on the cob, or a tray of roasted vegetables could make a welcome addition to the BBQ.
Desserts
The hosts might have considered things like food and drinks, but desserts often get forgotten. In summer, hand-crafted ice cream can be the perfect treat everyone will appreciate. If you can, take a range of flavors and some dairy-free options.
Other desserts like cheesecake and mousse can also be refreshing on a hot day.
Utensils
BBQs can get a little chaotic if there are a lot of guests. It’s easy for the hosts to run out of tableware or struggle to find the right utensils to cook everything people have bought. Taking extra plates, cutlery, glasses, and cookware is a great idea.
Chairs
Seating is another thing that we can struggle with if we’re entertaining more people than usual. Ask your host if it’s something they need, and if you’ve got anything like dining chairs, take them.
Another thing that might be needed is an extra table for food and drinks or to give the host somewhere outdoors to prep food.
Blankets
Blankets are another welcome addition to an outdoor party, whether used for sitting on or keeping people warm when it starts to cool later on. Both picnic blankets and woolen blankets or fleece throws could be useful.
Sunscreen
Sunscreen is often forgotten, and the host is unlikely to have enough for all the guests. Taking some sunscreen means that people will be able to stay at the party for longer without worrying about getting burned. Make sure you get some options that are suitable for sensitive skin and children.
Drinks
Drinks are always welcome at any party. Things like wine, beer, spirits for cocktails, and fruit juice are all awesome things to take.
Entertainment
Board games, a pack of cards, a tennis set, and other outdoor games give everyone something to do and can be a great way to break the ice, especially if not all guests know each other.
No one likes turning up to a party empty-handed. The good news is, if you haven’t been told what to take, you can’t go wrong with one of these options.
