Why a Parakeet Makes the Perfect Pet

So you’re looking for a new pet and you’re not quite sure what to get. You like dogs and cats, but they’re quite ordinary, you’re not really into small furry animals like hamsters and gerbils, and fish are a lot of hard work. So what’s left?

Well, what about a parakeet? These small, bright birds are charming, intelligent, and relatively easy to take care of, so they could be exactly the right option for you and your household. Let’s take a look at why adding this feathered friend to your home is a great idea – read on to find out more.

Affordable

The first thing to think about is the price – pets can be expensive, especially purebred dogs and cats, for example, and you could be looking at spending many hundreds, or even thousands, which isn’t something everyone can do or even wants to do.

Compared to a lot of other animals, including other types of parrots, parakeets are a great choice because they’re so affordable not just to buy, but also to take care of once you do. You’ll need to get a cage, food, and toys (those last two will be ongoing purchases), and that’s about it, so it won’t cost a lot to get yourself set up with your new pet. The hardest thing you’ll need to do is narrow down the parakeet names you’ve thought of to find the perfect one.

Small Size

Another great thing about parakeets is that they’re only small (usually around seven inches or so), which means they’re not going to take up much space in your home, even if you live in a smaller space like an apartment, for example. However, even though they’re small in size, parakeets have huge personalities, so they’ve got everything you might be looking for in a pet, wrapped up in a tiny little package that makes them a lot easier to take care of than a larger animal would be.

Parakeets need a balanced diet of seeds, pellets, fruits, and vegetables, and they’ll also need fresh water every day. You’ll have to clean out their cage on a regular basis, but something not a lot of people know is that parakeets like to keep their living areas tidy, so they’ll do at least some of the work for you!

Great Companions

Some animals don’t live very long, which can be heart-breaking to have to deal with, but a parakeet will usually live for between 10 and 15 years, which is lovely – you can really enjoy their company. And when we say they’re company, we mean it – parakeets are very sociable and make really good companions for everyone.

The truth is that parakeets thrive on being around people and love to interact, and unlike some animals, they’ll even show love and affection to their owners, which makes them a truly enjoyable pet to have. They’re also quite vocal, chirping away and even mimicking sounds and voices they hear around the house, so they’re a fun little friend to have at home and can truly be the most remarkable pet.
